Year 1 Review: What We Built, What We Learned

Year 1 is done. 1,400 customers, $415K revenue, team of 6, lessons learned. Here is the founder retrospective. What we built, what we learned, where year 2 takes us.

Answer

Year 1: launched at $297 + state fee, grew to 1,400 customers across 47 countries, $415K revenue with ~42% net margin, team of 6 across NYC and Dhaka. Built the core product (Wyoming LLC formation), 4 comparison categories (244 programmatic pages), 60+ blog posts, open-source handbook on GitHub, and free tools (Mercury Approval Calculator, Cost Calculator, Decision Tree). Year 2 goals: 4,000+ customers, expand to Hindi/Spanish languages, ship the next round of product features.

What we built (product)

  • Core LLC formation product at $297 + state fee
  • 244 programmatic content pages (industries, cities, banking comparisons, tax treaties)
  • 4 free tools: Mercury Approval Calculator, Cost Calculator, Decision Tree, Form 5472 Template Pack
  • 60+ blog posts
  • 50,000-word open-source US LLC handbook on GitHub (MIT licensed)
  • Banking partner relationships with Mercury, Relay, Wise Business

What we built (operations)

  • Team grew from 3 to 6 (2 paralegals, 2 support, 1 engineer, founder)
  • NYC + Dhaka office split
  • Bengali language customer support
  • WhatsApp Business as primary support channel
  • $99/year Form 5472 + 1120 filing add-on

What we learned

  • SEO + open-source content beats all paid channels for ROI
  • Specific business descriptions drive 33% higher Mercury approval
  • Customer office hours (twice-monthly Zoom) increase retention significantly
  • Bengali language support produces 15% of customer base from our office market
  • Bootstrapped + transparent pricing wins against VC-funded competitors at lower price points

Where year 2 goes

  • Target 4,000+ customers (3x year 1)
  • Hindi language rollout (Q4 2027)
  • Spanish (LatAm) rollout (Q3 2028)
  • Year 2 product: Multi-state LLC formation support (Delaware, Florida as add-on options)
  • Year 2 tools: Tax treaty calculator, banking strategy advisor, dissolution helper
  • Year 2 content: 88 blog posts (matching year 1 plan)
  • Year 2 team: grow to 12-14 across NYC, Dhaka, and remote contractors

What I am most proud of

We stayed bootstrapped. We kept prices at $297 + state fee. We did not chase VC growth at the cost of sustainable margins. We told customers honestly when competitors fit them better. The brand we built is one I would want to use as a customer.

What I would do differently

Hire support faster. Lead with Form 5472 education in onboarding. Skip Twitter ads. Start the open-source handbook in month 1, not month 6. Build the calculators earlier as conversion tools.

Frequently asked questions

Will you stay bootstrapped in year 2?
Yes. No plans to raise venture funding. Sustainable profitability matters more than scale at this stage.
Will year 2 prices change?
No on the core formation product ({PRICING}). Possible add-on adjustments (Form 5472 may increase to $149/year for new signups).
What if competition increases?
We compete on price + transparency + specialization. Our open-source handbook and content moat are durable. Competition pushes us to be better.
Are you looking to hire?
Yes. See Careers page for current openings. Focus areas: Hindi/Spanish content writers, customer support reps in NYC time zone, paralegal capacity expansion.
