Cause 1: Vague business description (40%)
The single largest driver. "I run a tech business" gets rejected. "I run a Shopify store selling premium leather wallets to US customers from Jaipur manufacturer, fulfilled via ShipBob Dallas, expected $20K monthly revenue" gets approved. Specificity matters more than any other factor.
Cause 2: PAN/passport name mismatch (20%)
Indian PAN cards often have slightly different name formatting than passports (initials, middle name placement, all caps vs mixed case). Mercury's KYC checks match these strictly. Fix: ensure the name on your LLC Articles, EIN CP575, passport, and PAN all match exactly. If they do not, update one to match the others before applying.
Cause 3: Restricted business category (15%)
Mercury rejects crypto exchanges, gambling, adult content, and certain money services. Indian founders sometimes apply for these expecting normal treatment. Move to Wise Business at 95% acceptance for restricted categories.
Cause 4: Source of funds documentation (15%)
For initial capital deposits above $10K, Mercury asks where the money came from. Indian founders should have a clean explanation: prior business revenue, personal savings from salary, family loan with documentation. Vague answers get flagged.
Cause 5: Multiple recent applications (10%)
If you have applied to Mercury within the past 6 months and been rejected, re-application gets penalized. Wait 6 months between attempts. Or move to Relay/Wise instead.
